From global commitments to regional action - biodiversity protection and ecosystem restoration in the Western Balkans, Policy Framework

The Western Balkans is one of Europe's most biodiverse regions, supporting unique species, valuable habitats and ecosystems that are vital for people and nature. Conserving and restoring this natural heritage requires action at all levels, from global commitments to regional implementation.

This brochure presents the key policy frameworks that guide biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration in the Western Balkans, showing how international commitments are translated into EU policies and further reflected in regional initiatives under the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans, including the Western Balkans Six Biodiversity Strategic Plan 2030 and the Western Balkans Six Forest Landscape Restoration Plan.

By bringing these frameworks together in a single resource, the publication aims to support policymakers, practitioners and other stakeholders in advancing coherent and effective action for nature across the region.

This brochure is created as part of the project Nature Aligned Western Balkans: strengthening biodiversity governance and dialogue, implemented by IUCN. This project is funded by the German Federal Environment Ministry’s Advisory Assistance Programme (AAP) for environmental protection in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia and other countries neighbouring the European Union. It is supervised by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation and by the German Environment Agency. The responsibility for the content of this publication lies with the authors.
