Grasslands and Savannas: Defining Degradation, Restoration, and Key Principles for Success
The second in a two-part series supported by the Safeguarding overlooked ecosystems: protect, manage and restore grasslands and savannahs in Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay project, this report examines how degradation and restoration success are defined in grassland and savanna systems, reviews key restoration interventions and their trade-offs, and identifies critical scientific, institutional, and implementation gaps that limit effective action. Drawing on global case studies and emerging evidence, the report highlights the importance of context-specific, socially inclusive, and ecologically grounded restoration approaches that can support resilient landscapes and communities while enabling restoration efforts to be scaled up sustainably.
