Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR)

Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) is an integrated approach that aims to regain ecological functionality and enhance human well-being across deforested and degraded areas. Rather than focusing on individual sites, FLR works at the landscape level, balancing ecological, social and economic priorities to deliver long-term, sustainable benefits.

FLR plays a crucial role in addressing climate change by strengthening ecosystem resilience, improving biodiversity, enhancing water and soil systems, and supporting sustainable livelihoods. In regions such as the Western Balkans, where land degradation, climate risks and socio-economic challenges intersect, FLR provides a practical framework for implementing nature-based solutions.

This infographic was developed as part of the ADAPT 2.0: Nature-based Solutions for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in the Western Balkans project, funded by Sweden. It aims to communicate the core ideas of FLR in a simple and visual way, making the concept accessible to policymakers, practitioners and the wider public.

At the heart of the infographic are the seven IUCN FLR principles, which define what successful restoration looks like in practice.
