MozWateR project supports hydraulic and hydrological modelling for the Mozambique's northern basins

IUCN in Mozambique through MozWateR project supported a workshop to present the study of the hydraulic and hydrological models of the river basins of the Messalo, Montepuez and Megaruma rivers, an initiative that represents a decisive step towards strengthening the management of water resources in Northern Mozambique.

On May 5, the city of Pemba hosted the workshop to present the study of the Hydraulic and Hydrological Models of the river basins of the Messalo, Montepuez and Megaruma rivers, an initiative that represents a decisive step towards strengthening the management of water resources in Northern Mozambique. 20 years after the creation of the Regional Administration of Águas do Norte (ARA Norte, IP), the institution now has, for the first time, hydraulic and hydrological models of these three basins, instruments considered essential for planning, integrated water management and response to extreme phenomena such as floods and droughts.

The main objective of the workshop is the analysis, discussion and validation of the developed models, ensuring their technical robustness and adequacy to the national needs of water management. This is a relevant milestone for the consolidation of ARA Norte's institutional capacity and for the improvement of water governance in the region.

At the opening of the event, the General Director of ARA Norte, Carlitos Omar, highlighted the importance of ensuring that the models presented are effectively used. According to the official, the challenge is to ensure the installation and operationalization of these instruments in the Messalo, Montepuez and Megaruma basins, so that they contribute in a concrete way to decision-making in the sector.

The hydraulic and hydrological models are being developed by the company Consultec, with funding from the MozwateR Project, as part of efforts to modernize and strengthen the water sector in Mozambique. The meeting brings together technicians and representatives of various institutions in the sector, with emphasis on the (PMSU), represented by the Chief of Party of the MozwateR Resources project, Agostinho Bento, and by the Specialist in Integrated Water Resources Management, Dinis Juízo.

The holding of the workshop in Pemba reinforces the commitment of national authorities and development partners to promote sustainable and evidence-based management of water resources, in a context of growing environmental and climate challenges.
