Dr Ananda Mallawatantri addresses visiting students of Johns Hopkins University

As part of a comparative report on Kenya, Peru, and Sri Lanka towards the commemoration of the 800th Anniversary of the Forest Charter, Professor Tiffany Basciano of the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) led a group of students to Sri Lanka. These students attached to the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) focused on the research aspects on environmental human rights defenders protecting forestland.

During an event hosted by the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BSIS) on Colombo on 26 January 2017, IUCN Country Representative Dr. Ananda Mallawatantri, shared his views and experience about the key challenges and roles of human rights defenders for forest conservation. Dr Mallawatantri, highlighted the value of ecosystem based data for effective operation of
human rights defenders. Dr Harinda Vidanage, Director BCIS, Ms Shashikala Wijesiriwardane, Manager-Litigation, the Environmental Foundation Ltd were the other two input providers to this venue.
