Newsletter for Marine Protected Area Agency Partnership, now out

For the first time, one of the major themes of the IUCN Congress, held recently in Marseille, was Ocean Health. To strengthen the global MPA network by 2030, the Marine Protected Areas Agency Partnership (MPAAP) has released its 2021 newsletter, with news of global and regional MPA coalition activities and successes.

In their latest newsletter, MPAAP showcases:

  • Ocean protection events at the IUCN Congress, where the Union’s 1300+ government, nongovernmental and indigenous peoples’ Member organisations vote on major conservation issues. In total, 72 ocean-related events were also organised during this international summit including 23 at the Ocean & Islands pavilion.
  • #IMPANA news (International Marine Protected Areas Network Agenda): from science to policy.
  • Regional MPA Networking news, including the Caribbean, South-East Asia, Latin America and Australasia.
  • MPAAP member experiences, starting with the setting up of marine parks in Australia's Indian Ocean island territories, and moving on to other countries' MPA agencies experiences with mangrove conservation, and using marine parks to train sailors and captains in good maritime practices.
  • Events calendar, showing events up until IMPAC5 in Canada, September 2022.

Protecting the ocean is a matter of intergenerational justice, preserving its integrity is essential for the future of humanity.”

Peter Thomson, UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for the Ocean, 7 September 2021, Marseille
