Despite the unique challenges presented by the Covid-19 global pandemic, 2020 was a year of progress on many fronts for TRI. In Pakistan, for example, programme partners worked with local communities to put in place incentives and measures to restore and protect threatened chilgoza pine forests. In Cameroon, the work of one pioneering community leader is helping to inspire other women to become more involved in restoration. And in the archipelago of Sao Tome and Principe, development of microcredit schemes supporting farmer-led restoration is demonstrating both the power and importance of smallholder investments in restoration.

2020 also saw the advancement of a number of exciting and potentially significant initiatives at the programme level. These include an online course on forest landscape restoration presented in partnership with Yale University, publication of a new tool providing assessments of threatened species to better inform restoration and conservation measures, and a new mentorship programme developed by UNEP’s Finance Initiative to support partners in developing restoration-based businesses and investment proposals.
