UN to adopt a Political Declaration to commemorate UNEP's fiftieth anniversary

UN member states agreed to adopt a Political Declaration on the Special Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme, March 2022. IUCN WCEL provided important input (see under "Downloads" in this article) during the negotiation process, highlighting, among other things, the need to be science-based, ambitious, and forward-looking. Transformative change of human systems are necessary to develop within “safe operating space for humanity". Environmental law and governance are crucial in bringing about such change.
