Gender and Climate Awards jointly launched by the Embassy of France, French Development Agency, and IUCN Pakistan

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Embassy of France and the French Development Agency, launch the first Pakistan Gender and Climate Awards, with the objective to highlight women’s commitment and leadership in the fight against climate change and the need to integrate gender equality in all policies resulting from the Paris Agreement.

Women play a significant role in combating the adverse effects of climate change. They manage the natural environment, produce food, and contribute to improve the quality of life in their communities.

The Awards will promote the inclusion and leadership of women in climate action. They will draw attention to good practices and concrete solutions led by women from civil society for a more fair, equal and healthy planet.

This project responds to the Paris Agreement's objective of promoting gender equity and justice, and youth engagement, in climate action. The Awards will recognize initiatives, projects and solutions with women or gender perspectives, in two broad result areas: 1) Women’s rights and gender equality and 2) Climate Resilience.

The Gender and Climate Awards are in line with the gender policy objectives of the National Climate Change Policy of the Government of Pakistan (October 2021). They also make up a concrete follow up to the launch of the first national Climate Change Gender Action Plan (ccGAP) of Pakistan on July 20, 2022 by IUCN and the Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC), Government of Pakistan.

Three ‘Award Winners’ will be selected by a jury, with a  first prize of 3,500 EUR, a second prize of 2,500 EUR, and a third prize of 2,000 EUR.

The awards are open to  activists, grassroots and women-led organisations (including community-based organisations, private education institutions, and social enterprises) working for climate protection and/or gender equality. Only non-governmental initiatives are eligible. The awards will recognize on-going initiatives or projects, launched within the past 5 years.

The call for application was published on September 14 and will remain open till November, 1, 2022 (11pm Pakistan Standard Time).
