World Heritage & IUCN

Our World Heritage team in the IUCN North America Office actively builds partnerships to support the World Heritage Convention, prioritizing those natural wonders most in need.

Irreplaceable sites such as the Galápagos Islands, Yellowstone National Park, Wood Buffalo National Park, or the Great Barrier Reef have received the highest level of international recognition through the World Heritage Convention. For over 50 years IUCN has been the official advisor for new sites, monitors the state of conservation of existing World Heritage sites, and provides technical and policy advice to UNESCO, States Parties and the World Heritage Committee. IUCN also supports the on-the-ground protection of the world’s natural heritage while ensuring that local communities thrive/benefit.
