Les petits mammifères sont souvent négligés au profit des grands mammifères charismatiques. En général, ils ont été sous-étudiés et sous-représentés en termes de financement et d'actions de conservation. Cela signifie que pour la majorité des espèces du SMSG, les connaissances écologiques de base sont insuffisantes et que très peu de personnes travaillent à leur conservation. Le SMSG est un réseau mondial de chercheurs et de défenseurs de l'environnement qui s'efforcent d'améliorer la compréhension scientifique des quelque 3 000 espèces de petits mammifères du monde et de promouvoir la conservation de celles qui sont les plus menacées.

Dr Thomas LACHER, JR.

Email : [email protected] Dr. Thomas E. Lacher, Jr., is a Full Professor Emeritus in Ecology and Conservation Biology at Texas A&M University. He was also Senior Vice-President and Executive Director of the Center for Applied Biodiversity Science at Conservation International. Dr. Lacher has been working in the Tropics for over 40 years, with field research experience in Mesoamerica, South America, and the Caribbean. He is an Associate Conservation Scientist at Re:wild in Austin, a Research Scientist at both the Instituto Tabuleiro and Instituto Neotropical in Brazil and is a member of the IUCN Climate Change Specialist Group. He handles New World species for the SMSG.

I am the Programme Officer for the IUCN SSC Small Mammal Specialist Group hosted by Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. I mainly work on Red List assessments, assist our members and help with the day-to-day running of the group. In 2022 I completed my PhD at the University of Reading, studying the ecology and conservation of West European Hedgehogs.
