Los pequeños mamíferos suelen pasar desapercibidos en favor de mamíferos carismáticos de mayor tamaño. En general, han sido poco estudiados y poco representados en términos de financiación y acciones de conservación. Esto significa que la mayoría de las especies del SMSG carecen de conocimientos ecológicos básicos y que muy pocos trabajan para conservarlas. El SMSG es una red mundial de investigadores y conservacionistas que trabajan para mejorar el conocimiento científico de las más de 3.000 especies de pequeños mamíferos del mundo y promover la conservación de las más amenazadas.

Email : [email protected] Dr. Thomas E. Lacher, Jr., is a Full Professor Emeritus in Ecology and Conservation Biology at Texas A&M University. He was also Senior Vice-President and Executive Director of the Center for Applied Biodiversity Science at Conservation International. Dr. Lacher has been working in the Tropics for over 40 years, with field research experience in Mesoamerica, South America, and the Caribbean. He is an Associate Conservation Scientist at Re:wild in Austin, a Research Scientist at both the Instituto Tabuleiro and Instituto Neotropical in Brazil and is a member of the IUCN Climate Change Specialist Group. He handles New World species for the SMSG.

I am the Programme Officer for the IUCN SSC Small Mammal Specialist Group hosted by Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. I mainly work on Red List assessments, assist our members and help with the day-to-day running of the group. In 2022 I completed my PhD at the University of Reading, studying the ecology and conservation of West European Hedgehogs.
