Setting the Stage for the BBNJ PrepCom: Key Takeaways from Day 1

As we mark the start of a five-day workshop intended on the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdictions (BBNJ) Agreement, in Koror, Palau. This meeting is a significant moment for the Pacific, co-hosted by the Chair for the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) and the Pacific Ocean Commissioner (OPOC). Delegates from various Pacific Island Countries have come together, united in their mission to prepare for the first session of the Preparatory Commission (PrepCom) happening in New York from April 14 to 25, 2025. It’s a wonderful opportunity for collaboration and shared learning as we tackle issues affecting our oceans.

The main goal of this workshop is to bring together Pacific Island nations and create a united front for the upcoming PrepCom. Since this is the very first PrepCom for the BBNJ Agreement, we have the chance to discuss many key topics for the first time. This makes our meeting particularly meaningful, as we work together to shape the future of our oceans and ensure that our voices are heard on the global stage. It’s a unique opportunity to collaborate, share ideas, and set a strong foundation for what lies ahead.

Yesterday, we welcomed more than 70 participants, including government delegates, experts, and representatives from regional organizations. The room buzzed with enthusiasm as everyone dove into discussions about the urgent issues facing marine biodiversity. It was inspiring to see so many passionate individuals coming together, eager to share their insights and collaborate on solutions. The energy in the air set a positive tone for the days ahead, highlighting the value of our mutual contributions to protect our oceans.

The day began with an introduction to the PrepCom agenda, where participants were briefed on the key topics that will be addressed in April. Our role is to address and shape the important issues that affect us all. The leadership from the Pacific region is vital, and we must establish this through our actions regarding the management of our biodiversity. This meeting is a step for us to engage in global efforts regarding Marine BBNJ.

A big takeaway from Day 1 meeting is that unity is key in negotiations. We all have a shared responsibility to protect our ocean resources for future generations.

Day 2 is underway! Today, we will learn about the different groups that help carry out the BBNJ Agreement. Experts will explain their roles, how they work, and why they matter. This includes the Science and Technical Body, the Access and Benefit-Sharing Committee, the Capacity Building & Transfer of Marine Technology Committee, and others. With today’s teamwork, we are ready for a productive discussion.
