Earth Day Celebrated by IUCN Pakistan at Quetta

Quetta: The World’s leading Environmental Union, (IUCN) International Union for Conservation of Nature Pakistan, in collaboration with Girls Guide Association Balochistan celebrated the Earth Day 2011 with the tiltle, “A Billion Acts of Green”. A large number of participants from academia, schools and community members attended the event. The event was organized by Balochistan Partnerships for Sustainable Development (BPSD). A poster compitition was also organized on the occasion. The objective of poster compitition was to sensitize the young generation about the importance of planet Earth and creat awareness for its protection and safety from hazardous pollutions.Twelve students from different schools participated in the poster competition.

Addressing on the occasion Zabardast Khan Bangash Manager IUCN Balochistan said that since mid-1990s, IUCN with financial assistance of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN) is striving to build the capacity of government and civil society in Balochistan to address the complex and wide range of environmental issues being faced by the province. He also shared that IUCN under its Balochistan Partnerships for Sustainable Development (BPSD) Program focused all aspects of natural resources conservation of Balochistan and is playing its role in advocacy, awareness raising and is trying to sensitize the masses about protection and conservation of environment.

Mr. Zabardast Khan Bangash also made adetailed presentation on Climate Change and Global Warming and its effetcs on our earth and explained that if we, the human beings, continue the degradation of earth resources, environment, flora and fauna at rapid rate, the droughts, cyclons, floods, food security and epidemic diseases will increase in near future. He emphasised that the time is passing very rapidly and new generation can play their role in conservation of natural reosurces of earth for our own survival.
Dr. Irfan Ahmad Baig renowned environmentalist and feature writer of the Daily Jang and Green Award holder from Prime Minister of Pakistan in his key note speech said that Almighty Allah has blessed our country with all kind of natural resources. Pakistan has diverse ecological zones and some of them are in Balochistan. But the question is that are we utilizing these resources sustainably? He also highlighted the importance of old and conventional karezes of Quetta city and regretted that these prime water source is no more functional just because of our negligence. He appreciated the work of IUCN, specifically along the coast of Balochistan and said that the barren lands and beaches have been turned into green areas through mangrove plantation. The mangroves not only play a role in marine life protection but also in controlling the disasters like tsunami and cyclons.

Two documentaries of IUCN focusing on the boidiversity, marine life, livelihoodand,
and a documentry on water and the role of women in conservation were shown on the occasion. The participants lauded the efforts of IUCN towards the rehabilitation of marine ecosystem on the coast of Balochistan.

BPSD team constituted a jury for judging the posters which comprised of the following:

• Mr.Akram Dost from Fine Arts Department University of Balochistan
• Ms.Bushra Kamal Social activist and
• Mr.Zahoor Ahmed Bazai Director Training University of Balochistan.

The result was annonced by Mr Zahoor Bazai. Yousma Tariq of Govt Girls Railway High School took the first position, while second and third positions went to to Imran Khan from Model Public High school and Farishta from Governament Girls High School Hazara town Quetta respectively.

Mr Akram dost also expressed his views and appriciated the IUCN work for organizing the Earth Day, 2011 event. He said that these are the plateforms, specialy for young student to express their thoughts through art. He further said that he was highly impressed by IUCN’s work for conservation of nature and showed his desire to work with IUCN on enviormental conservation.

Mrs.Ishrat Aliyani Chairperson Balochistan Girls Guide Association also appreciated the work of IUCN and said IUCN sensatized our youth and other stakeholders regarding conservation of nature. She also assured her full support to IUCN. In the end awards and certificates were distributed among the winners and the participants.
