At CMS COP14, Parties will review the implementation of the Convention, including progress made in the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Migratory Species 2015-2023, and will adopt a New Strategic Plan for the period 2024-2032.

Convened under the theme, "Nature knows no borders", COP14 will be the first global biodiversity gathering since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) in 2022, and will thus provide a crucial opportunity for further alignment between CMS and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and to support the implementation of the GBF.

Over the years, IUCN has been instrumental for the work of CMS and at the COP, IUCN will be providing Parties with technical advice on the status and conservation needs of particular migratory species as well as scientific evaluations of proposals to amend the listing of species on CMS appendices.

IUCN's key objectives at CMS COP14 are to:

    • Strengthen collaboration with CMS Secretariat, CMS Parties and Range States to conserve and improve the status of CMS listed species.
    • Call for effective implementation of CMS New Strategic Plan for Migratory Species 2024-2032, programmes of work and concerted actions to contribute to the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
    • Call for greater synergies between CMS and CBD and other biodiversity-related conventions in conservation of threatened species.
