Green list for Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas

The general objective of the project is to strengthen management quality and equitable governance of marine protected areas in the Mediterranean through the Green List process. Pilot sites engaged will serve as case studies for customizing the Green List standard at Mediterranean scale. The project will support the States Parties to the Barcelona Convention in the adoption of the flagship Green List initiative. Being the first Regional Sea Convention (RSC) to promote the standard as an indicator of MPAs performance, this initiative will be therefore actively monitored, reported and disseminated.

Project’s aim is to ease the adaptation and fine-tuning of the IUCN’s Green List Standard for protected and conserved areas” to the Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas context – with a network approach applied priory in SPAMIs – in order to identify and develop a Med MPAs-customized set of specific indicators for accomplishing with the Generic Indicators of the IUCN Green list Standard, to be used by any MPA in the Med as a tool to assess and improve their management effectiveness and apply to the IUCN Green List Standard.
