From Global Commitments to Local Action on Biodiversity and Climate

As part of the formal Biodiversity Day proceedings, this session, co-organized by the COP27 Presidency and IUCN, will highlight the importance of local action from communities and societies across the world to develop and implement Nature-based Solutions to address climate change and sustain biodiversity. It will highlight successful approaches and examples for management of terrestrial and wetland ecosystems, including in relation to restoration.

The formal proceedings for the COP27 themed day Biodiversity Day, organized by the Government of Egypt, aims to advance global and regional efforts towards conserving, restoring and sustainably using biodiversity to reduce climate change impacts and leverage Nature-based Solutions to mitigate climate change and build resilience for people and nature.

This event will officially launch the COP27 Presidency ENACT Partnership for Nature-based Solutions. ENACT will serve as a hub for Party and non-state actors working on NbS to foster collaboration and bring global coherence to activities on NbS, by sharing experiences and knowledge; supporting the implementation of NbS activities on the ground, and bringing a collective voice to the global community on NbS to inform evidence-based policies, while driving alignment across climate, land degradation, and biodiversity negotiations.

  • H.E. Steffi Lemke, German Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection

  • H.E. Eisenhower Nduwa Mkaka, Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change of the Republic of Malawi
  • Ms. Brenda Mallory, Chair of the Council on Environmental Quality, Executive Office of the President, USA
  • H.E. Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for the Environment
  • Muralee Thummarukudy, Director of the G20 Global Initiative on Land of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
  • Mr Nigel Topping, High Level Climate Champion of the UK
  • Ms Razan Al Mubarak, IUCN President
