Light pollution is a growing transboundary environmental problem that affects various species and habitats. Various national governments have already started to take action to address light pollution and protect the night for the sake of the environment, species, and human health. However, the action remains fragmented. Therefore, global action is needed to protect the night and facilitate the achievement of the ambitious biodiversity targets and to align with action taken by CMS (e.g., Resolution on Light Pollution 13.5 and International Light Pollution Guidelines).
The side event will raise awareness of light pollution and its impacts, the need to protect the night, and potential solutions, including the policy actions required to address these growing impacts (such as IUCN’s Resolution on Global strategy for natural darkness restoration and the Light Pollution Policy Brief).
