Although there has been an unprecedented recognition of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) by a wide range of state and non-state actors in recent years, there is still resistance to its use among some state and non-state actors. A clearer recognition of NbS in decisions of the three Rio Conventions, building on the recent UNEA resolution, will not only help to ensure greater consistency across these key international policy processes but also provide a more robust operational framework to guide its implementation on the ground. A clearer reference to NbS would also give greater confidence to the many state and non-state actors who are already implementing them at scale, while allowing governments to have greater oversight and accountability of its use.
In the lead up to UNFCCC COP27 and CBD COP15 held in Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt) and Montreal (Canada) respectively, IUCN aims to generate greater awareness and understanding on NbS, particularly among its State/Government Agency/NGO/IPO members. In particular, it plans to organise, with the support of its regional offices, a set of regional level ‘NbS socialisation’ webinars in the months of September and October 2022 that can provide a basic briefing on the concept, application and policy uptake of NbS to various IUCN members across different regions. Ideally, government representatives from IUCN State Members, including CBD and UNFCCC negotiators, from each of the regions will be invited to attend and participate in these respective briefings, and to share their national experience of integrating and implementing NbS.
Therefore, we would like to invite you to join the webinar for the West Asia region.
