I would like to thank Dan Simberloff for his beautiful tribute to Ed Wilson which captures Ed's intellectual breadth and brilliance, as well as his deeply compassionate, considerate and warm personality. I was privileged to work with Ed closely in 2009-2010 on The Barometer of Life concept. He gave me so much advice and time, not to mention repeated encouragement. And we interacted over the years on numerous issues. He was always there to stand up for biodiversity. My last communications with him were when he added his voice to the campaigns to save the Atewa Forest in Ghana, and Los Cedros in Ecuador - in both cases in opposition to mining plans. Ed's stature in the field of biodiversity was such that it's impossible for anyone else to step into his shoes. But I am one of many who is intensely grateful for everything he did to advance biodiversity science and conservation over 6+ decades. Goodbye Ed, I'll miss you.
