SINCERE’s main goal is to substantially advance innovative mechanisms (IM) for the provision of forest ecosystem services across Europe and beyond, and to align them with a coordinated supportive policy framework, in view of working towards a Europe-wide incentive system for forest ecosystem services. The strategic impact of SINCERE will, at its core, be achieved through the creation of an international “learning architecture”. This architecture will closely connect a series of practical innovation actions across and beyond Europe to interdisciplinary research and policy processes in the EU’s multi-level policy making system, in view of maximizing the societal value of forest ecosystem services and enhancing their sustainable provision. Specifically, SINCERE will connect existing knowledge and expertise of different actors across the critical interfaces between practice (forest managers, business, public administration), research and policy making. It will spur innovations across these spheres in view of unlocking the potential of forest ecosystem services in the process of transition from a fossil based economy towards a bio-economy. SINCERE hence aims to work towards a European forest based bio-economy that is based on the entire spectrum of forest ecosystem services, and hence aligns sustainably managed multifunctional forests to the broad spectrum of pluralist societal demands.

Provide an evidence base for innovations for forest ecosystem services through systematic reviews

Build and run a Learning Architecture to facilitate learning between practitioners, policy makers and academia

Develop, implement and analyse innovations for forest ecosystem services

Synthesise knowledge gained across all innovation actions and from all involved disciplines for upscaling

Work towards a coordinated European policy framework to support forest ecosystem services provision

Disseminate knowledge on how to enhance forest ecosystem services
