The general objective of the project is to strengthen management quality and equitable governance of marine protected areas in the Mediterranean through the Green List process. Pilot sites engaged will serve as case studies for customizing the Green List standard at Mediterranean scale. The project will support the States Parties to the Barcelona Convention in the adoption of the flagship Green List initiative. Being the first Regional Sea Convention (RSC) to promote the standard as an indicator of MPAs performance, this initiative will be therefore actively monitored, reported and disseminated.

Project’s aim is to ease the adaptation and fine-tuning of the IUCN’s Green List Standard for protected and conserved areas” to the Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas context – with a network approach applied priory in SPAMIs – in order to identify and develop a Med MPAs-customized set of specific indicators for accomplishing with the Generic Indicators of the IUCN Green list Standard, to be used by any MPA in the Med as a tool to assess and improve their management effectiveness and apply to the IUCN Green List Standard.

A regional MED MPA EAGL is established and trained, coordinating the actions of the national EAGLs already created and supporting their creation in the countries where it is missing
The Green List Standard is adapted to the specific challenges of marine ecosystems (connectivity, governance systems, human activities, impacts and adaptation to climate change) and to SPAMIs. This includes the design of specific indicators for Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas, and its submission to the IUCN Green List Standard Committee,
The IUCN Green List Standard is benchmarked with existing management effectiveness evaluation methods used for SPAMIs;
a significant sample of MPAs and other protected areas typologies from 15 Mediterranean countries will be used as case studies to assess usefulness and feasibility of the Green List criteria and adapted indicators (planning, management, governance and conservation outcomes)
