IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025

The 2025 IUCN Congress brought together over 10,000 attendees, on-site and online, and was the first to ever host a World Summit of Indigenous Peoples and Nature. The IUCN Congress brought together decision-makers from government, civil society, Indigenous Peoples' Organisations, academia, and business for more than 1000 events aimed at setting the conservation and sustainable development agenda for decades to come.

Powering transformative conservation

The world stands at a critical juncture after decades of conservation efforts: the path we are on is still unsustainable. The climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and global health crises are all being compounded by growing global political and socio-economic instability.

With only five years remaining until the 2030 deadline for the Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development Goals, and Global Biodiversity Framework, the IUCN Congress 2025 taking place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates this October 9-15 emerged as a pivotal opportunity to elevate ambition, accelerate action and scale up collaborative solutions that address the needs of both nature and people, ensuring that sustainability efforts are equitable and just.

The Congress tackled five critical themes, each driving the bold, transformative change needed to secure a sustainable future for both nature and humanity.

Sustainability focus

At the heart of the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 Sustainability Policy was a commitment to embed sustainability across the entire Congress lifecycle - from planning and delivery through to legacy - in alignment with the ISO 20121:2024 Certification standard. Following a 20-month certification roadmap and the rigorous application of the Plan–Implement–Check–Act–Improve cycle, ISO 20121:2024 certification was awarded upon successful completion of an independent third-party audit.

The Sustainability Report presents evidence of implementation, actions taken, and results against the performance indicators established throughout this process. It offers a comprehensive account of the journey, covering scope, methodology, legacy, and lessons learned to inform and guide future editions of the Congress.

Voices for Congress

Voices for Congress gathered reflections from people across regions and sectors on what message they would share with the world’s most diverse gathering of conservation professionals. These are stories of hope, urgency, and collaboration. These are Voices for Congress. Together, these voices are showing how shared purpose, resilience, and connection drive transformative conservation.
