The overall objective of this Thematic Group is to improve the knowledge base on ecosystem services and their values, and stimulate the integration of this knowledge in planning and decision making for sustainable ecosystem management. To achieve these objectives, the CEM Ecosystem Service Thematic Group aims to create a global network of knowledge bases and case studies in order to develop best practice guidelines for the sustainable management of ecosystems, with the further aim of demonstrating real life applications of the ‘ecosystem services concept’ and that investing in nature conservation and restoration ‘pays’!

I am a senior researcher in the Water Science Unit at the Agricultural Research Council, South Africa. I am also a research fellow of the Conservation Ecology and Entomology Department at Stellenbosch University, and I chair the African Region of the Society of Wetland Scientists and serve as treasurer to the South African Hydrological Society. My research focus is on understanding the benefits of nature-based solutions, such as wetland restoration and clearing of alien tree invasions, using applied remote sensing and hydrological modelling approaches. As such, much of my research has been on the development of approaches for, and application of ecosystem service quantification.

I am passionate about sustainable biodiversity and ecosystem service conservation and management e.g., as Nature-based Solutions for climate resilient sustainable ([peri-]urban) development and just sustainability transitions. I integrate transformative community engagement, transdisciplinary processes and environmental justice in response to societal and environmental challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change and deepening inequity. I have received multiple awards, including the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Climate Protection Fellowship, Outstanding Educator Award from the Society of Wetland Scientists and the Digital Green Talents Award for Sustainable Development from the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).
