IUCN at the 64th session of the Subsidiary Bodies to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change
From 8 to 18 June 2026, IUCN is participating in the sixty fourth session of the Subsidiary Bodies to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC SB64).
Convened at the World Conference Centre in Bonn, Germany, UNFCCC SB64 will bring together over 5,000 government representatives and observers to follow up on key decisions that were adopted during UNFCCC COP30 in Belém, and lay the groundwork for delivering successful outcomes at UNFCCC COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye in November this year.
Parties will focus on a wide range of issues in Bonn, covering mitigation, adaptation, climate science, technology, trade, finance, just transition, and plans for the second global stocktake, among others. In addition, a number of important mandated events, workshops and dialogues, including on the respective linkages between climate change and mountains, ocean, gender, agriculture and food security, and Indigenous peoples and local communities, will be held during SB64. Other high-level briefings, roundtables and consultations will be also convened by the current and incoming COP Presidencies and the High-Level Champions on building greater climate ambition and action in the lead up to COP31. These will include updates on the COP30 Presidency Roadmaps on Forests and Fossil Fuels launched in Belém last year.
In addition to following the negotiations, IUCN will be actively engaged in several of these discussions, especially to highlight its ongoing work and to advance ambitious and joint action on climate and nature, building on the outcomes of last year’s IUCN World Conservation Congress. Of particular interest, in this regard, will be the ongoing discussions among UNFCCC Parties, to build greater synergies and enhance collaboration and policy coherence across the three Rio Conventions.
Some of the key sessions and events that IUCN will participate in during SB64 include the following:
- 8-9 June: COP30 Presidency Roadmap on Halting and Reversing Forest Loss and Degradation by 2030 (IUCN submission)
- 9 June: Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) Workshop under Baku Adaptation Roadmap
