IUCN CEM’s Ecosystem Restoration Thematic Group (ERTG) improves local-to-global ecosystem restoration by contributing technical guidance and translating restoration science into practice. Towards this end, IUCN CEM’s Ecosystem Restoration Thematic Group Works to improve the capacity for high-quality ecosystem restoration by: Contributing technical guidance to a) CEM Thematic and Specialist Groups, Task Forces and Partners, b) IUCN programmes and members; and c) the global restoration community; and Hosting and promoting activities and events that help translate ecological restoration science into practice.

Dr Renee YOUNG
Lead

Dr Renee Young is Program Director for Conservation and Restoration at the Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute. She works at the intersection of science, policy and practice to strengthen the restoration economy and create the enabling conditions for large‑scale ecological recovery. Renee is the current Lead of the IUCN CEM Ecosystem Restoration Thematic Group (2026–2029) and is recognised internationally for her contributions to restoration standards, systems‑level planning and the integration of Indigenous and Western knowledge. Her work spans local to global initiatives, supporting evidence‑based restoration outcomes for communities, industry and governments.

Ms Karma Bouazza

Karma Bouazza is an International Consultant on Ecosystem Restoration and has developed and supported projects and programs across diverse ecosystems and regions in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. She is currently the Chair of the Society for Ecological Restoration's Board of Directors and Co- Lead of the IUCN CEM Ecosystem Restoration Thematic Group (2026–2029). She has supported the development of several publications, including the Standards for Practice to Guide Ecosystem Restoration under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Her main focus is on scaling-up ecosystem restoration under both local and global contexts, bridging restoration science and practice, in order to advance standard-based restoration globally.
