The IUCN SSC New World Marsupials Specialist Group is an international network of specialists who undertake research on American marsupials which mission is to generate information on marsupial biology, identify gaps in their knowledge, and provide evaluations for their effective conservation and management.
The focus of the NWMSG is to generate a conservation plan for New World Marsupials, combining geographic information with ecological, physiological and other natural history data, which should set a framework to identify areas of taxonomic singularity and richness, increase our knowledge on different ecological traits (e.g. reproduction, feeding), and help define species for which conservation efforts should be implemented.
Increase the taxonomic and geographic coverage of species analyzed, bringing them closer to the recent taxonomic arrangements (i.e. newly described species).

This study compiles individual assessments from the IUCN Red List website, discusses current information available for New World Marsupials (NWMs), provides a comprehensive taxonomic account, outlines known population trends, identifies major threats, and highlights research needs for these taxa by incorporating data from various sources.
