Reverse the Red: Collaborative species conservation efforts in South America.

Reverse the Red seeks to establish and expand diverse but united species conservation networks worldwide. The Center for Species Survival model works to understand the key networks, stakeholders and conservation efforts nationally; to identify priority gaps in assessments, planning and action needed to save species and to ensure that efforts are connected effectively and have access to the necessary tools, capacity building and resources required to maximize impact.

Strategic species conservation is being taken to a whole new level by the Reverse the Red movement through the creation of an international network of IUCN SSC Centers for Species Survival (CSS). Currently, there are 16 Centers worldwide, and two of them are located in South America. CSS Brazil is hosted by Parque das Aves and was founded in 2019, and CSS Argentina has been hosted by Fundación Teimakèn since 2020.

The objective of this session is to make visible the work carried out by CSS Argentina and CSS Brazil, and how it contributes to the conservation of biodiversity (SDG 15) by accelerating joint actions through alliances with strategic sectors (SDG 17).

Reverse the Red: mobilizing national networks to contribute to CBD targets

The CBD Global Biodiversity Framework reflects an encouraging ambition toward saving species, but in many cases, capacity continues to fall short of this vision. Reverse the Red is committed to supporting national players in boosting capacity and strategically achieving a tenfold reduction in species risk and rate of extinction.
  
Reverse the Red partners are joining forces to work together at national level in order to invite key stakeholders to review the current status of in-country species conservation, listen to experiences on what is working and detect where more support is needed to make the biggest positive impact on the targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

During this session, we will explore the SSC National Species Specialists Group model as a way to create and mobilize national capacity and to demonstrate that through clear, creative target setting, ambitious capacity building and increased collaborative action, we can reverse the negative trends in biodiversity loss.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has been involved in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) since its drafting and through its development, providing technical and policy advice and supporting the implementation of the Convention and its protocols, in line with IUCN’s goals and mission.

IUCN Commissions play a key role in the adoption and implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) to catalyze decisive action to halt the loss of biodiversity. IUCN's knowledge products provide data for biodiversity assessments, inform the setting of global and national targets and contribute to the development of biodiversity indicators. 

This panel will feature a lively discussion on the role, strategies and actions IUCN Commissions are taking to support the implementation of GBF and what are their perspectives on the global vision of a world living in harmony with nature by 2050.
