GGGI and IUCN Partner to Strengthen Green Growth and Conservation in the Pacific

Suva, Fiji, February 3, 2025 –  The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) today formalized a partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The collaboration aims to combine both organizations strengths to work with Pacific Island Countries (PICs) to foster green growth, promote climate resilience and adaptation, and protect the unique ecosystems of the Pacific.

IUCN’s expertise in Nature-based Solutions (NbS) complements GGGI’s focus on promoting low emission, sustainable, and climate-resilient development. By leveraging IUCN’s networks and technical leadership in NbS, the partnership enhances GGGI’s ability to implement integrated locally led solutions that protect ecosystems and empower local communities across the Pacific.

The MoU outlines a shared commitment to driving change across the Pacific in several key areas. These include promoting sustainable agriculture to enhance livelihoods and food security, promote ecosystem restoration, scaling up Nature-based Solutions to boost climate resilience and conserve biodiversity, and advancing climate finance strategies like green and blue bonds to fund critical initiatives. The partnership will also focus on addressing regional climate and biodiversity challenges, strengthening capacity through knowledge sharing and technical support, and establishing frameworks for monitoring progress. Additionally, the MoU supports policy advocacy to help Pacific Island countries meet their sustainable development goals and enhance policy frameworks.

“This MOU is symbolic of our efforts to foster and strengthen our partnerships in the region to advance nature conservation towards advancing sustainable development for our people and planet Partnerships such as this; need to be elevated in ways where we can be more innovative and creative in facilitating and engaging solutions for nature conservation for our people in Oceania,” said Leituala Kuiniselani Toelupe Tago, IUCN Oceania Regional Director.

“As we sign this MOU today, we welcome new and potential opportunities for our organisations to collaborate and work together as we move into the future. “The Pacific Regional Director, GGGI, Mr. Saki Tuisolia said, “GGGI and IUCN is ready to deliver on our shared commitment to sustainable development and environmental conservation in the Pacific where our countries and communities face a serious existential threat from global warming and climate change. Through this partnership, we will leverage our collective expertise to drive innovative solutions, enhance climate resilience, and promote nature-based approaches for a greener, more sustainable future.”

The partnership also builds on successful ongoing collaborations, including the “Promoting Pacific Island Nature-based Solutions” project, funded by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). Additionally, an upcoming project focusing on an “Ecosystem-Based Approach for Climate Change Adaptation,” under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded initiative will further bolster this important work.

Through the combined expertise, resources, and innovative financing mechanisms of GGGI and IUCN, this partnership will create new opportunities for joint projects, strengthen capacity, and empower local communities and governments to build climate resilience.
