Survey confirms Members’ support for the IUCN Contributions for Nature Platform
The IUCN Contributions for Nature Platform continues to grow, with over 240 IUCN constituents, predominantly Members, now using this digital, spatial visualisation tool to document and report on their conservation actions.
A recent survey, conducted from 24 November 24 to 7 December 2025, received an impressive 417 responses from Members, Commission members and Secretariat staff, demonstrating strong engagement across the Union.
"The response has been extremely encouraging," said Iain Stewart, Director of Membership, Commissions and Communications at IUCN. "This level of participation shows Members are genuinely invested in strengthening the Contributions for Nature Platform and maximising its value for the conservation community."
To date, IUCN constituents have documented more than 10,400 contributions through the platform, showcasing conservation and restoration actions worldwide. Among those respondents already using the platform, 65% reported increased awareness of their projects, while 51% noted enhanced credibility through IUCN validation.
"The survey provides insight and guidance for the development of this unique IUCN tool," said IUCN’s Chief Scientist Thomas Brooks. "At least half of respondents reported wanting to see the data harnessed to advance each of five use cases: documenting the implementation of the IUCN Programme, guiding conservation investments, reporting IUCN's aggregate contributions to global goals for nature, communicating and promoting various examples, and understanding the contribution of specific actions towards global goals."
The platform allows IUCN constituents to document conservation and restoration projects with a spatial footprint, along with information on the threats being addressed, types of interventions and project beneficiaries. Then, with the spatial data provided, the platform uses the latest IUCN-backed science, such as The Species Threat Abatement and Restoration (STAR) metric, among other measures, to quantify the project’s potential contributions to global and national goals for biodiversity and climate change mitigation.
The survey respondents provided constructive recommendations for platform enhancements, including more reporting options, regional reporting capabilities and expanded training support, thus demonstrating the Union's collaborative approach to continuous improvement.
