IUCN strengthens Pacific leadership with appointment of new Regional Director

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Susana Lomani Waqainabete-Tuisese as Regional Director of the IUCN Oceania Regional Office (ORO), based in Suva, Fiji

Susana assumes this leadership role at a pivotal moment for the Oceania region as countries continue to strengthen action on biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and sustainable development efforts. Her appointment reflects IUCN’s continued commitment to Pacific-led leadership and strong regional partnerships.

A proud Fijian national with over thirty years of experience in conservation and sustainable development, Susana brings deep regional expertise and a strong record of working alongside governments, communities and partners. Most recently, she served as Vice President and Senior Director for the Pacific Islands Ocean Programme at Conservation International, where she provided strategic oversight and strengthened partnerships across multiple Pacific Island countries. From 2011, she served as Country Programme Director for Fiji. Earlier in her career, she held the position of Conservator of Forests within Fiji’s Ministry of Forestry and gained valuable private-sector experience within the pine industry.

Across these roles, Susana has demonstrated a consistent ability to mobilise resources, strengthen collaboration, and translate policy commitments into practical conservation outcomes that benefit both nature and people.

“Ms Susana Lomani Waqainabete-Tuisese brings to this role extensive regional experience, strategic vision and a deep commitment to conservation and sustainable development in the Pacific. Under her leadership, I am confident that IUCN Oceania will continue to strengthen collaboration with our Members, governments and partners, ensuring that global commitments translate into tangible action for communities and ecosystems across the region, said Dr Grethel Aguilar, IUCN Director General.

As Regional Director, Susana will provide strategic leadership for IUCN’s engagement across Oceania, with a strong focus on supporting national priorities, strengthening institutional partnerships, and advancing practical conservation solutions. She will join IUCN’s senior management team and work closely with State and Government Agency Members, civil society organisations and regional institutions to deepen cooperation and deliver meaningful impact.

I am honoured to join IUCN at this significant time for our region. The Pacific has always led with resilience, stewardship and unity. I look forward to working alongside our Members, partners and communities to strengthen collaboration, elevate Pacific voices, and turn our shared commitments into practical results that safeguard our ocean, lands and livelihoods,” said Ms Susana Lomani Waqainabete-Tuisese.

Under Susana’s leadership, the Oceania Regional Office will continue to prioritise responsive, country-driven support while advancing IUCN’s mission to create a just world that values and conserves nature.
