Hong Kong launches new Nature-based Solutions Design Guidelines

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China today launched the Hong Kong Nature-based Solutions Design Guidelines, jointly developed by the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), the latter an IUCN Member.

The new guidelines aim to provide practical planning and design guidance for infrastructure and development projects, drawing on the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions™.

They propose three core principles: promoting ecosystem diversity at multiple scales; embracing human-nature coexistence for mutual benefit; and improving resilience through Nature-based Solutions (NbS).  Local case studies are included to help engineering teams integrate NbS into their workflows. The Northern Metropolis development, including the San Tin Technopole, is identified as an early opportunity to apply the guidelines.

IUCN's Global Head of NbS Charles Karangwa participated in the promulgation ceremony and contributed a Foreword, welcoming the initiative as a contribution to mainstreaming biodiversity across infrastructure, planning and urban development. “It is our hope this pioneering resource will inspire cities worldwide to translate global NbS principles into actionable practice, scale credible and high-integrity implementation, and contribute meaningfully to a nature-positive, climate-resilient, and sustainable future for all."

Mr Karangwa also noted Hong Kong's potential to serve as a regional catalyst to help shape nature-positive urban development across the Greater Bay Area and the wider Asia-Pacific region.
