The Swiss EAGL has landed
The IUCN Green List for Protected and Conserved Areas made an important step forward in its implementation with the inauguration of the Swiss Expert Assessment Groups – Green List (EAGL) in Gland, at IUCN's headquarters on May 8th 2018.
The members of the EAGL were welcomed by the Director of the Global Protected Areas Programme, Trevor Sandwith who opened the workshop. Technical presentations followed by Jenny Kelleher of the Global Protected Areas Programme, Marnie Bammert of the Accreditation Services International (ASI) and Roman Eyholzer of the Porini Foundation, who will act as the implementing partner for the IUCN Green List in Switzerland.
The Swiss EAGL, convened by the World Commission for Protected Areas (WCPA) and approved by ASI, will act as the guardian of the Green List, ensuring that the GLPCA Standard is applicable in Switzerland, and will also evaluate Swiss protected areas against the indicators of the Standard. The objective of workshop was to train the Swiss EAGL members on all aspects of the IUCN Green List Standard and the accompanying User Manual, and to strategically plan the work ahead, with a view to welcoming Swiss sites to join the ever-growing global community of IUCN Green listed sites.
