Obituary - Mr Benoît Nzigidahera

It is with great sadness that we announce the death, on 10 May 2018, of Mr. Nzigidahera Benoît, President of the IUCN National Committee in Burundi, Legal Representative and President of the Association for the Protection of Natural Resources for the Good Of Burundi Population (APRN / BEPB), Member of IUCN.

Mr. Nzigidhera held several positions throughout his career: Head of the Biodiversity Research Department at the Burundian Office for Environmental Protection (OBPE); National Focal Point of the Clearing House Mechanism-CBD (Clearing House Mechanism-CBD) Information Exchange Center; National Focal Point of the Subsidiary Body Responsible for providing Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice to the Convention on Biological Diversity (SBSTTA); Focal Point of the National Report for the Clearing House Mechanism Central of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CHM-NR-NFP); National Authorized User of the Clearing House Mechanism Central of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CHM - NAU); National Focal Point of the Intergovernmental Scientific and Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

A man of the field and a hard worker, Mr Nzigidahera dedicated his life to research on biodiversity in Burundi, and has 73 publications on biodiversity to his credit. He was Director of final dissertations at the University of Burundi (Faculty of Sciences, Department of Biology, Faculty of Agronomy and Bioengineering), Institute of Applied Pedagogy, the Ecole Normale Supérieure. He also provided technical supervision of the final dissertations for the Master's degree at the University of Dschang (CRESA FORET-BOIS) in Cameroon.

His passing is a great loss for IUCN and the world of nature conservation. On behalf of the entire IUCN family, we extend our sincere condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.
