This is the latest of IUCN Academy of Environmental Law proceedings volume which contains success stories in environmental law from well-recognized authors and emerging scholars. This collection focuses on environmental law and its positive impact on the world. With contributions that illustrate international narratives of successful and innovative approaches to solving historic and contemporary issues, these stories invite readers to think about how environmental law can be a potent tool towards achieving sustainable development.

This volume covers a range of inspirational stories, such as global phase out of lead in gasoline, New Zealand’s national strategies for oceans governance, adoption of lessons from the Forest Charter in international law, protection of wetlands in Ghana, alternative approaches to climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction, sustainable approaches to urban housing, and the role of courts in environmental enforcement in China. These articles then present key lessons learnt in responding to complex environmental challenges, and provide an opportunity to radically rethink environmental law and its critical role in shepherding positive environmental outcomes at global and national scales.

The editors of this volume are: WCEL Steering Committee Member Rose-Liza Eisma-Osorio, Professor at the University of Cebu, the Philippines; Former WCEL Steering Committee Member Elizabeth A. Kirk, Global Professor of Global Governance and Ecological Justice at University of Lincoln, United Kingdom; and Jessica Steinberg-Albin is Adjunct Professor at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law, Pace University, US.
