Luc Lavrysen appointed as Dutch language president of Belgian Constitutional Court

 

By Laura Burgers - On 25 September 2020, WCEL Member Luc Lavrysen was appointed the Dutch language president of the Belgian Constitutional Court. The Belgian Constitutional Court consists of 12 justices who review the constitutionality of certain acts of the Belgian legislative branch.

Belgium’s Constitutional Court has six Dutch language members and six French language members. These include two presidents, a French and a Dutch language president, the latter of the two functions now being fulfilled by professor Luc Lavrysen.

WCEL congratulates its member Professor Lavrysen on this accomplishment.

The Court can annul, declare unconstitutional and suspend laws, decrees and ordinances that violate certain provisions of the Belgian Constitution.

Luc Lavrysen is an environmental law professor at Ghent University, where he leads the Centre for Environmental and Energy Law. He is also the president of the EU Forum of Judges for the Environment and has worked with UNEP on the role of the judiciary. Professor Lavrysen is a Founding Member of the Global Judicial Institute on the Environment and he is currently on the Interim Governing Committee.
