Tribute to former IUCN Director General, Professor Duncan Poore

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Professor Duncan Poore, former IUCN Director General.

Professor Poore was IUCN’s acting Director General in the years 1976–77, and previously Scientific Director of the Union.

After receiving an MA in natural sciences, specialising in botany, he completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge. Over the course of his long and distinguished career he also served as Professor of Botany at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur; as Director of the Nature Conservancy in the UK; and as Professor of Forest Science and Director of the Commonwealth Forestry Institute at the University of Oxford.

Duncan Poore was also Senior Research Fellow at the International Institute for Environment and Development.

He died peacefully on 22 March in Scotland. IUCN sends condolences to Professor Poore's family.

He will be remembered as a man who led the way in conservation and contributed to IUCN’s mission of achieving a "just world that values and conserves nature."
