More about the Specialist Group
The International Union for Conservation of Nature Hoverfly Specialist Group (HSG) was formed in 2018. The group brings together experts on hoverflies from around the world who will use their expertise to assess the threat of extinction for these species through the Red List, contribute to scientific knowledge generation and dissemination and engage in conservation actions for them.
The mission of the HSG is to accomplish the Red Listing of European hoverflies, and in so doing to increase current knowledge of the taxonomy, ecology and distribution of European hoverflies, promoting their long-term conservation.
Specialist Group work
Insect pollinators such as hoverflies are the second most important pollinator group after bees. They have an important role in the decomposition of materials, can function as bio-indicators and can be used in biological control. Regardless of their numerous roles, their conservation, like many other invertebrates, is usually overlooked and neglected.
HSG on the IUCN Red List
To inform conservation efforts, HSG assesses species for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
