IUCN connects 27 local environmental organizations and governments from Libya, Morocco and Tunisia at the PPI-OSCAN regional workshop
From June 2-4, the city of Monastir (Tunisia) will welcome the twenty-seven beneficiary organisations of the 3rd edition of the PPI-OSCAN programme (Programme de Petites Initiatives pour les Organisations de la Société Civile en Afrique du Nord), as well as representatives from governments and cooperation agencies, with the aim of enhancing the role of North African civil society in nature conservation and the sustainable management of terrestrial, coastal and marine ecosystems.
The event is organized in partnership with the Tunisian Ministry of the Environment and IUCN member Notre Grand Bleu.
Innovative initiatives providing local and regional impact
The projects selected for this edition, led by civil society organisations, cover a wide variety of topics, such as:
- Developing an inventory of biodiversity in Libya's wetlands
- Conserving 5 wetlands of high importance for biodiversity
- Preserving 5 national parks in Morocco (4) and Tunisia (1) and 2 nature reserves
- Improving the management of 4 oases in Morocco (2) and Tunisia (2)
- Promoting sustainable practices in agriculture and fisheries.
The projects, which have been selected with the support of the governments, contribute to the implementation of national strategies to tackle climate change and conserve biodiversity.

The PPI-OSCAN programme works to build the capacities of young organizations who are willing to engage in environmental and sustainable development action in North Africa, through innovative field initiatives.
Since its launch in 2014, the PPI-OSCAN has supported 37 organizations in its first phase (2014 to 2017), and 43 in the second (2018-2021). Implemented from 2021 and 2024, PPI OSCAN 3 is building on the achievements of the first two phases, providing technical and financial support for 27 new projects in Libya, Morocco and Tunisia.
The programme is co-financed by the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM), the MAVA Foundation and the Sigrid Rausing Trust Foundation.

A regional perspective for nature conservation in North Africa
For 3 days, project managers will benefit from training activities, which range from strategic planning, communication to networking techniques. Indeed, for 17 of the beneficiary organizations, the PPI-OSCAN is the first time they receive a grant from the programme. It is therefore essential to help these key actors develop their capacities to access new partnerships and develop their activities.
Networking between young and historic organizations from the three countries will also aim to strengthen regional cooperation for the benefit of conservation in the Mediterranean.
