IUCN donates patrol boats and billboards to strengthen management of Dong Peng Multiple Use Area

On 24 June 2025, IUCN handed over two engine-powered patrol boats and six educational billboards to the rangers and Community Protected Area (CPA) of the Dong Peng Multiple Use Area in Sre Ambel District, Koh Kong Province. This is a part of the Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Conservation and Management Project, led by IUCN and funded by the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (2021-2025). The project responds to urgent threats to Asia’s marine ecosystems by expanding Marine Protected Area (MPA) coverage and enhancing management effectiveness in Thailand, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

The patrol boats will strengthen core protected area functions, including regular patrols, biodiversity monitoring, research, rapid response to illegal activities, and other conservation operations. The billboards have been installed at community entry points and key biodiversity zones to raise awareness among locals and visitors about conservation priorities and prohibited activities. This contribution will supplement ongoing efforts to strengthen protected area management capacity and promote community engagement.

Presiding over the handover ceremony were IUCN Cambodia Head and the Director of the Department of Marine and Coastal Conservation, Ministry of Environment (MoE), along with rangers and CPA representatives. IUCN and MoE leaders underscored the importance of collaborative management and recognised the vital role of communities in safeguarding Cambodia’s marine and coastal ecosystems.

This practical support will improve law enforcement, strengthen community ownership, and raise public awareness, contributing to the long-term conservation and sustainable management of the Dong Peng Multiple Use Area.
