The purpose of the Kenya National Species Specialist Group (KeSSG) is to coordinate expertise across taxonomic groups and disciplines to support governments, facilitate evidence-based decision-making, and the development of policies that will contribute towards reversing the decline of species. The Wildlife Research and Training Institute, Kenya Wildlife Service, the National Museums of Kenya, and Kenya’s Marine Fisheries Research Institute, are all national agencies with mandates strongly linked to the purpose of this group. These four institutions are providing the leadership and coordination of the KeSSG

Esther is an Entomologist with great interest in biodiversity conservation. Her main focus is on insects in the diverse ecosystems in her country Kenya and East African region at large. In the recent past, Esther been engaged in the digitazation of the natural history collections in Museums in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania with a focus on Lepidoptera and has has supported capacity building for young researchers and local communities in conservation. Esther is involved in the Species Survival Commission, IUCN and has undertaken assessment on butterfly species in Kenya. She is a member of the IUCN Kenya Species Specialist Group (KeSSG) where she is the Co- Chair

Mohamed is a zoologist and biochemist specializing in marine ecology and management. He has extensive experience in ecological monitoring of coastal marine protected areas, mangrove research, and management planning, including coral reef conservation and management and wildlife censuses. His main objective is to achieve the sustainable management and conservation of coastal and marine landscapes. Currently, he serves as principal research scientist at the Marine & Coastal Research Centre of Kenya's Wildlife Research and Training Institute.
