Dr Nisha OWEN
Co-Chair

Dr. Nisha Owen is Executive Director at Global Greengrants Fund UK, supporting environmental justice and climate justice grassroots movements in over 170 countries worldwide, with a particular focus on the themes of Earth Stewardship (including rights-based approaches to conservation, stewardship and land tenure), Just Energy Transition, and Equity and Justice. Nisha is a conservationist with more than two decades of experience championing locally-led efforts to value and conserve the natural world for the benefit of communities and future generations, with a PhD from the University of Leeds on human-wildlife conflict in south India.

Previously, Nisha worked at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), developing the EDGE of Existence programme into its current incarnation as a ZSL flagship conserving distinctive species and empowering in-country conservationists, as well as developing innovative online capacity building initiatives with United for Wildlife and National Geographic Society. Nisha then played an integral role in the rapid establishment and growth of charitable foundation On the Edge as Director of Conservation, supporting the locally-led conservation of EDGE species around the world and through the SSC EDGE grants. The conservation of irrepleaceable species is continued in her role as Co-Chair (and co-founder) of the IUCN SSC Phylogenetic Diversity Specialist Group focusing on the tree of life, and as a member of the Conservation Advisory Panel of the World Land Trust.

My research aims to quantify the current and future impacts of extinction across the Tree of Life, with particular focus on deep phylogenetic branches at risk. These deep branches are represented by Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species, and I work with ZSL’s EDGE of Existence programme to identify EDGE species to guide conservation action and avert the loss of deep evolutionary lineages. I support the EDGE programme’s mission to train, support, fund and mentor early-career conservationists from lower and middle income countries to deliver conservation projects on overlooked EDGE species.
