This project focuses on two sites in North Macedonia: Lake Ohrid and the Shar Mountains. It will facilitate processes and develop documents contributing to the re-proclamation of the former as a protected area, and the proclamation of the latter.

The project is split into two phases: Phase I (June-October 2020) and Phase II (this project, March 2021 to October 2021).

Both phases are funded by UNEP under GEF project 5528: Achieving Biodiversity Conservation through Creation and Effective Management of Protected Areas and Mainstreaming Biodiversity into Land Use Planning.

*An extension until October 2021 is under negotiation.

The project will develop the following three documents:
- A valorisation study of the biodiversity and cultural assets of Lake Ohrid, including proposals for the boundary, zonation and a management body;
- A draft management plan for Lake Ohrid;
- A draft management plan for the proposed Shar Mountains National Park.

Phase I produced the draft valorisation study and inputs contributing to both draft management plans. Phase II will finalise all three documents, in consultation with key stakeholders.
