The Government of the Cook Islands is committed to operationalise the Marae Moana (Cook Island Marine Park (CIMP)) which covers approximately 2.0 million km2 of Cook Islands EEZ and MSP is a key component. This will see the establishment and strengthening of various forms of protected and locally managed areas within the CIMP, including protected natural areas, community conservation areas, and ra’ui sites.

Through MELAD – Environment and Conservation Division (ELD), the Government of Kiribati (GOK) will focus on coastal, islands, and atoll spatial planning. This project will assist GOK to develop and formulate atolls bioregional map combining both terrestrial and marine species and habitats including also areas of cultural and traditional importance to conserve Kiribati culture and heritage.
