In the Africa region, World Heritage sites (WH) host a rich biodiversity and represent remarkable ecosystems. But there are also other sites of high biological potential that are considered for future registration in order to increase the low representation of the Africa region (9%) on the WH list. IUCN, as an advisory body to the WH Convention, assesses proposed sites for inscription, monitors the state of conservation of the properties inscribed, advises and contributes to the implementation of the Convention's strategy, supporting States Parties on requests for international assistance, strengthening the capacity of site managers etc.

In addition, IUCN is leading a global initiative called the Green List (GL). The Protected Areas Green List is an approach to help protected areas achieve the standards of good management and governance practices, which is an essential component of the Outstanding Universal Value of World Heritage sites.
The IUCN Protected Areas & Conservation Program (Papaco) has been supporting the implementation of WH and GL activities in Africa for several years with the support of the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF).
