Agroecology in Dryland Mosaic Landscapes

Africa’s drylands and grasslands face a tight knot of problems: recurrent droughts and erratic rains, depleted soils and vegetation, drying water points, blocked livestock corridors, and unclear rights—all of which erode food and fodder security, spark conflict, and accelerate biodiversity loss. This survey asks how to overcome that knot by identifying locally led bundles that can re-stitch multifunctional landscapes—linking cropland, communal rangelands, woodlands, and water—so they work as one system again.

This technical discussion paper is targeted towards practitioners, member organisations, researchers, local government/extension teams, and implementation partners who operate in Africa’s dryland and rangeland mosaic landscapes. It translates on-the-ground practice into replicable “how-to” bundles and links them to monitoring and scale strategies. A French version is available here: https://iucn.org/node/45819
