Proposing the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions as the main operational framework to implement UNEA Resolutions 5/5
The IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solution (NbS) is adaptable to the local, regional and national social and ecological contexts, and focuses on achieving the major environmental, social, and economic goals in an integrated manner. These goals were articulated in the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) 2022 Resolution 5/5 on Nature-based Solutions for supporting sustainable development.
The purpose of this information paper is to:
1) present the links and complementarity between the IUCN Global Standard on NbS and the UNEA Resolution 5/5 on NbS for supporting sustainable development, explaining how the IUCN Global Standard for NbS is recognized as the best available operational framework to implement the UNEA Resolution;
2) describe the work that IUCN has done on defining and implementing NbS in addressing today’s most critical environmental and social challenges.
