Agroecology in Dryland Mosaic Landscapes

Dryland and rangeland mosaics across Africa face drought, degraded cover, and blocked mobility, eroding food, fodder, and stability. Agroecology is a proven, people-centred way to stitch these mosaics into one functioning system: combining locally led practices such as Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), soil–water harvesting, adaptive grazing, reseeding, and diversified agroforestry, to restore ecosystem health and improve food security, incomes, and social cohesion. This brief targets decision-makers and funders to promote policy actions that can be adopted to scale agroecology.

Key messages of this technical policy brief are centred around designing mosaics rather than plots, recognising secure tenure and mobility, committing to long-term and inclusive finance, backing proven agroecology action bundles, and supporting individual community experience.
