IUCN WCPA Technical Note : Enhancing Participatory Ecosystem Restoration with Artificial Intelligence
Aim: This technical note provides practical guidance on applying AI to participatory ecosystem restoration
within, around, and between protected and conserved areas (PCA, as defined by IUCN), with the aim of
strengthening community engagement and facilitating knowledge sharing.
Audience: A broad range of stakeholders involved in assessing, planning, implementing, and monitoring
ecosystem restoration in the context of PCAs. These include site managers, restoration practitioners,
government agencies, policy advisors, local associations and NGOs working to advance participatory,
inclusive, and adaptive restoration approaches. This note is particularly relevant for those exploring how
emerging digital technologies, specifically AI, can be responsibly and practically integrated into
restoration workflows.
