IUCN WCPA Technical Note No. 23: Ensuring that the MPA network under the BBNJ Agreement is ecologically representative
Recognizing the urgent need for effective conservation in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ), the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement establishes a framework for conserving and sustainably managing marine biodiversity in ABNJ, including the objective to create “ecologically representative and well-connected networks of marine protected areas” (MPAs) (Article 17(a)).
